quick update from Kae. sorry for the delay in all this. managed to break my arm (skateboards not good for over-40s), so my typing speed is very badly affected and some days I just can't do anything.
today I was working on the new uploader. once a file is uploaded, we will run a hash function over it, along with the current time and a hidden "salt" code we have for each user. this generates a unique 32-character code you can use to prove you uploaded that file at that time. evidence of copyright and all that.
I've put vanity URLs in place, so an artist will automatically be able to go to their page by putting their username after https://mp3u.com/ (if the username is 6 letters or more), or after https://mp3u.com/a/ (any username at all). I'm told the old site had problems with certain characters in usernames. the new one doesn't have those problems. use whatever you want.
logins work, and password resets work. haven't done registration yet.
I've been looking at how votes were done in the past, and we're going to try simplify things a little, but also spice things up slightly - votes will be done through "likes" (like FB). one like per person. the number of votes a track gets will contribute to an automatic "shadow" vote the next week, so if your track is very popular this week and everyone votes for it, it will still be popular next week even if there's no-one left to vote for it.
I've also been thinking about how to link Google and Facebook logins to your accounts, so you'll be able to login using whatever you're already logged into.
another thing - at the moment, one user equals one artist/band. as I've been reworking the database in my own image, I've also been trying to figure out the steps I'll need to take to separate users from bands/artists, so you can be in multiple bands if you like, and bands can have multiple users. there's a lot of work needed here, but I think it's possible.
I was hoping to recommend a public beta of the new site this weekend, but I don't think we're there yet. ... See more
